About Us

Local knowledge. Practical experience. A passion for growing.

Growing together, working with nature.

We’re Dave and Bertie, the husband-and-wife team behind Kernow Trees & Edible Gardens, founded in 2020. With over 35 years of combined experience, we bring a wealth of practical knowledge, a love of growing food and a genuine passion for trees, gardens and the natural world.

We’ve called the Waikato home for nearly 10 years and, as parents to five children, we understand the importance of creating productive gardens that are not only sustainable, but also practical, achievable and suited to real family life.

We love sharing what we’ve learned and helping people grow with confidence — whether you have a few fruit trees in the backyard, are starting an edible garden or are creating a productive orchard or food forest.

Dave Pendleton

Fruit trees, orchards & practical hands-on knowledge

Dave brings extensive practical experience in fruit tree care, pruning, orchard management and growing. He has a particular passion for understanding how trees grow and helping people develop the skills to care for their own trees.

From teaching pruning techniques to designing and establishing orchards, Dave takes a practical, hands-on approach and loves seeing the results of healthy trees, good structure and thoughtful management.

He's also the one you'll often find up a ladder, secateurs in hand!

Bertie Pendleton

Garden design, edible growing & creating productive spaces

Bertie has a passion for edible garden design, food forests, planting, soil health and creating beautiful, productive spaces that work with nature.

She loves bringing together plants, people and place — considering how a garden will look, function and evolve over time. From raised beds and herb spirals to larger edible landscapes, Bertie enjoys helping people turn their ideas into practical growing spaces.

She’s particularly passionate about sharing knowledge and making growing your own food feel achievable, whether you're an experienced gardener or just getting started.
